The Golden Compass - um....is this for kids?

I might be a little slow in getting to the movies lately (damn you bittorrent!!), but I went last night to see "The Golden Compass" with a friend and her daughter.
The movie's special fx were simply amazing. But....there was the final fight scene that involved a TON of violence (including killings).
I leaned into my friend and said, "and this is for kids?" To which she responded, "yeah it's like Braveheart...for kids"
I had to LOL. Hope I didn't distract anyone in the theater.
